"Here, planting a seed is both a literal act and an artistic practice. We cultivate the land to become sustainable, just as we cultivate space for ideas to grow, branch out, and thrive."

The Cascina

Farm,
hospitality
& art

Cascina Prunetto is a small multifunctional farm located in Prunetto, South Piedmont. Managed by farmer and theater director Anne Maike Mertens and theater actor Yannick Noomen, the farm merges high-quality agriculture: edible flowers and herbs, walnuts, honey, with artistic hospitality.

The Cascina will be a place where artists and creative lovers alike can create, and come to rest. At the moment three private bedrooms and a private cabin are being renovated.

Our story

Nearly
15 years
of theatre

For nearly 15 years, we have been creating theater in the Netherlands with our own company, Nineties, an eclectic theater company with a tremendous drive to experiment and a fearless curiosity about new art forms and ways of telling stories. Both the collaborators, the location, and the form change with each new project.

"While remaining nomadic theater makers, we've traded our Dutch home base for an Italian one."

We are still creating theater, producing one show a year. Just as we built our own theater company in the Netherlands, with openness and curiosity, we're now building Cascina Prunetto. As theater makers, connection, collaboration and intertwining our network are our core values, and we're incredibly excited to bring that vision into a welcoming, gastronomic space.

Space to
make
without
finishing

We believe in the phases that the cultural landscape tends to forget and neglect: the slow research, the productive dead-ends, the conversations that aren't about outcomes.

Who is it for?

Artists, makers, writers, researchers, choreographers, musicians, filmmakers, ceramicists, from any discipline. Solo artists and duos are equally welcome. Artists who seek ambiguity in style and form, if you are someone who thrives by working in between forms and shape, you are very welcome to join our community.

When?

Although the Cascina is still under construction, doors are open. In August we are hosting a first residency. From September onwards we are open to longer, more flexible stays shaped entirely around what each artist needs. One week or three months. Alone or in small groups. In high season or deep winter.

What does a stay look like?

As we are starting, we don't have clear formats yet, figuring out what works best. You may work alone for days. You may cook together every evening. You set the rhythm. We provide the space, the silence, and the conversation when you want it, and the distance when you prefer it.

How to apply?

Write to us. Tell us who you are and what you're in the middle of. We are a small, personal operation, we prefer a conversation over a form. There is no wrong way to reach out. There is no deadline for curiosity.

Woodworking
Workshop

A week of working with wood, tools, and the satisfaction of making something with your hands. Led by our beloved craftsman Jaimy de Wit. A real immersion into the process. The cascina workshop becomes a place of sawdust, focus, and slow thinking.

As few machines as possible, as much handwork as can be managed. Using planes, chisels, saws and wedges, each participant develops a small piece of their own: a stool, a cabinet, a box, a frame. You choose, as long as it can be carried by two hands and fits in Jaimy's car back to the Netherlands. At the end of the week, there will be a celebratory drink, perhaps rested on some freshly made side tables.

The week includes 6 nights and 4 workshop days at Cascina Prunetto. Rooms have a double bed and private bathroom. The large professional kitchen is available for cooking together, or you can head out to one of the nearby villages. The Ligurian coast is 45 minutes away; Genoa and Turin are reachable in 75.

Three rooms are available, with space for 3 to 6 participants. Arrival 12 July, departure 18 July. Cost: €1,000 per person or €1,700 for two. Pick-up from train station or airport is possible.

Details and daily programme follow upon registration.

Fresh Pasta
Workshop

Making pasta with Anne Maike, who can't stop sharing her love for pasta ever since she went to Cordon Blue pasta school in Firenze. The knowledge of hands. Flour, eggs, a long wooden table, and the kind of conversation that only happens around food being made.

An afternoon that goes longer than planned, and always should. You'll make pasta, eat it together, and carry the recipe home in your hands.

First Residency
August
First Open Residency,
Multi-discipline

Our first residency is open to artists from any discipline: theatre, visual art, writing, music, film, design, research. Up to three makers (or creative duos) share two weeks in the hills. No mandatory presentations. No fixed outcomes. You set the rhythm. We provide the space, the silence, the long dinners, and the conversation, when you want it.

As a celebration of our first opening, we offer this residency for free. We welcome 3 creatives or 3 creative duos from any arts discipline to work, research and reside at Cascina Prunetto. The farmhouse is located on a beautiful hill in the Alta Langa. The surroundings are quiet, the skies and views are incredible, surrounded by nature and the Italian calmness of the countryside.

What we offer

Lodging — A private bedroom with your own bathroom, a quiet corner to return to after a day of making.
Transport — Free pick-up from the nearest train station or airport.
Workspace — Sheds to work in, an old water silo, and a 100m² shared living room at your disposal.
Equipment — Basic technical gear: speakers, audio interfaces, projectors, and a clay oven for ceramics.
Kitchen — A professional kitchen. Cook alone or join our family meals for a small contribution.
Community — Connect with fellow artists and your hosts. Good company included.

On the 15th of August, the Italians celebrate Ferragosto. We will join this fest by celebrating our first residency period with a vibrant soft opening, inviting the community and friends to come taste and see the vibes of the Cascina. An evening of food, art, and la dolce vita.

The land
is part of
the work

Agriturismo

Cascina Prunetto is developing as an agriturismo, not as a hobby but as a genuine way of life that sustains the creative project. The land, the food, the seasons: all of it feeds the artistic work. Edible flowers. A vegetable garden. Beehives. Fruit trees. The mountain air. A table where things get talked through.

Edible Flowers & Herbs

Flowers are harvested and serve as dried colourful decoration for pastries, as infusion for teas and as fresh enrichments for salads.

Millefiori & Acacia Honey

We produce millefiori and acacia honey from our eight beehives, slow, seasonal, and entirely natural.

Walnut Oil

Walnuts from thirty walnut trees are turned into walnut oil, a Piedmontese tradition we are proud to continue.

Kitchen Garden

Set up in a polycultural way, greens and vegetables are used in our meals and sold in our roadside shop.

Tourism

The farm offers three private rooms and a private casetta for artists and creative travellers. Through special programs the farm invites a wide range of people, becoming a stage for stories and ecology. Guests experience the land through food and narratives that honour Piedmontese traditions.

Three Guest Rooms

Private, quiet rooms for artists in residence, designed for deep rest and deep work in equal measure.

Private Casetta

This one is under construction now. A separate 50 m2 stone cabin with kitchen, bathroom, separate bedroom and a lush garden with a terrace. An ideal space for solitary work or retreat. No interruptions. Just you and the hills.

Views to the Alps

Perched high above the Ligurian hills, the cascina looks out across valleys toward the snow-capped Alps.

Join us
In this phase of building and creating our space all help is welcome.

So if you are a construction lover with an appreciation for the quiet and beauty of the Italian hillside, please reach out. There are many construction and maintenance tasks of different levels, indoors and outdoors. We will provide housing and food.
